Short answer: choose an international-stock broker only after confirming the legal entity, exact exchange line, ownership form, complete cost stack, currency workflow, records and transfer path for your residence and account. A long country list does not prove that every client can buy every security.
Confirm the product and ownership form
Start with the order ticket and product documents. An exchange-listed cash share can provide direct or beneficial ownership through a custody chain. A CFD is a contract with the provider. An ADR or other depositary receipt represents an interest under a deposit agreement. A fractional interest can have different voting and transfer rights. These forms are not interchangeable.
Use Real Stocks vs CFDs before comparing platforms that show cash stocks and leveraged products in one search result.
Scope access to the legal entity
Availability depends on residence, the broker entity that opens the account, account type, investor classification, local rules, venue and instrument. A broker country-opening page is only an eligibility input; it is not evidence that a particular exchange line is enabled. Confirm the entity in the agreement and the instrument in the live or demo order ticket.
Verify the exact exchange and line
The same company can trade on several venues and in several currencies. Confirm the exchange, ISIN or other identifier, trading currency, settlement currency, lot size, hours and whether the broker routes to the displayed venue or another execution venue. Delayed quotes and market-data subscriptions must be checked separately from instrument availability.
Calculate the complete cost stack
Model commission, exchange and connectivity charges, bid-ask spread, market data, custody or platform fees, FX conversion, dividend conversion, taxes and levies, depositary-receipt or pass-through charges, and inbound or outbound transfer costs. Entity-specific schedules and the trade ticket take precedence over a marketing headline.
| Layer | What to verify | Primary evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Exact venue and product form for this account. | Entity agreement and order ticket. |
| Trading | Commission, minimum, spread and venue charges. | Current entity fee schedule. |
| Currency | Manual or automatic FX for trades, income and withdrawals. | FX terms and account statement. |
| Holding | Custody, data, ADR and corporate-action charges. | Trading conditions and deposit agreement. |
| Exit | In-kind eligibility, per-line fees and compatibility. | Both brokers' transfer policies. |
Separate trading currency from exposure
A EUR trading line can reduce an order-time conversion when the account already holds EUR, but it does not automatically remove the currency exposure of the underlying business. For DEGIRO's documented AutoFX workflow, trades and foreign-currency income can trigger automatic conversion; Manual FX changes how supported balances are held. Compare the event and current fee schedule with How to Compare Broker FX Fees.
Check dividends and tax records
Statements should identify the security, gross distribution, withholding, net cash, payment currency, conversion entries and corrections. Foreign withholding and local reporting depend on investor status and jurisdiction. A broker report is evidence for recordkeeping, not a universal tax calculation.
Check data orders and settlement
Delayed data may be sufficient for some long-term workflows but must be visible. Review bid and ask, depth where needed, supported order types, local holidays, settlement currency and failed-trade handling. Paid data, routing and settlement rules can differ by venue and account.
Check transfers and corporate actions
Before building a large position, confirm whether the exact line can transfer in kind, how fractions and ADRs are handled, whether the receiving broker accepts the same line, and which acquisition records move. Also check elections, mergers, rights issues, tender offers and mandatory conversions. Use Broker Portfolio Transfer Explained for the exit checklist.
Dated broker examples to verify
- Interactive Brokers: its official stock pages describe broad global market access, but availability and pricing still require the account entity, country eligibility, exact contract search and current commission schedule.
- Saxo UK: its UK pages show regional stock conditions and explicitly say pricing can vary by residence; custody and transfer terms must not be generalized to other Saxo entities.
- DEGIRO UK: official pages document foreign exchanges and AutoFX or Manual FX workflows; this is not a promise of a general-purpose currency account for every currency.
- Trading 212: the official multi-currency article scopes the feature to Invest accounts and supported currencies; eligibility and instrument access still depend on entity and residence.
- XTB: the official help centre distinguishes stocks marked STC from stock CFDs. Confirm the product marker and entity before treating a ticker as a cash share.
Compare fit by investor scenario
| Scenario | Priority | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional foreign purchase | Transparent all-in trade and FX cost. | Fee schedule and order preview. |
| Several currencies | Balance controls and conversion rules. | FX terms and statement entries. |
| Dividend portfolio | Withholding, income currency and corrections. | Sample dividend and tax reports. |
| Many venues | Data, order and settlement coverage. | Contract search and trading conditions. |
| Long holding period | Custody, corporate actions and portability. | Custody and transfer policies. |
Understand ADR and wrapper risk
ADRs can involve depositary or pass-through fees, foreign withholding, currency conversion and actions governed by the deposit agreement. Fractions can be non-transferable. CFDs and synthetic wrappers do not create the same shareholder rights as cash shares. Read the specific document rather than inferring rights from the company name or ticker.
Use a document first decision workflow
- Write down residence, account type, base currency and target market.
- Identify the broker legal entity and regulator in the agreement.
- Confirm the exact product form, venue and identifier in the ticket.
- Calculate trading, FX, data, custody, tax and exit costs once each.
- Inspect sample statements and corporate-action messages.
- Confirm in-kind transfer support with both brokers.
- Save dated source documents and recheck before funding.
Red flags
- A country or ticker list is presented as proof of account-level availability.
- Cash shares, CFDs, ADRs and fractions are mixed without clear product labels.
- FX cost is described without the conversion event, minimum or entity.
- Market data is delayed without a visible indicator.
- Custody, ADR, corporate-action or transfer charges are absent from the comparison.
- A regional fee page is treated as universal.
FAQ
Does an international broker provide every exchange?
No. Access is limited by entity, residence, account, venue, product and current broker permissions.
Does a multi-currency balance remove investment currency risk?
No. It can change the broker conversion workflow but not necessarily the economic exposure of the company or security.
Is an ADR the same as the local share?
No. It is governed by a deposit arrangement and can have different fees, currency flows and corporate-action mechanics.
Can every foreign position transfer in kind?
No. The exact line, custody location, fraction status and receiving broker determine portability.
