Interactive Brokers at a glance
Interactive Brokers is a strong choice for global market access and advanced cost control. Its breadth is also the main source of complexity: the serving entity, pricing plan, permissions and protection differ by country and product.
IBKR supports stocks, ETFs, bonds, funds, options, futures and currencies across many markets. Direct crypto is a separate conditional service executed and custodied by Paxos or Zero Hash. This review never treats one product list or one protection limit as global.

Who Interactive Brokers is best for
The best fit is an experienced self-directed investor, an internationally diversified portfolio or an active trader who will configure permissions carefully. A long-term ETF investor can also benefit from market and currency access, but should compare the total cost with a simpler local broker.
Entity and country scope
Interactive Brokers LLC serves eligible US securities accounts and is regulated by the SEC and CFTC and is a FINRA, NFA and SIPC member. Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited is FCA-authorised. Interactive Brokers Ireland Limited is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland under reference C423427. Other affiliates may serve other countries. The company name in the agreement controls.
Fees and commissions
For US stocks and ETFs IBKR Pro publishes tiered commissions from USD 0.0035 down to USD 0.0005 per share with a USD 0.35 minimum at the first tier, or fixed pricing of USD 0.005 per share with a USD 1 minimum. Eligible US residents can use IBKR Lite at USD 0 for eligible US-listed stocks and ETFs. Options are published at USD 0.15–0.65 per contract and US futures at USD 0.25–0.85 per contract before relevant third-party charges.
There is generally no account minimum or inactivity fee for standard individual accounts. Market data, exchange, regulatory, clearing, pass-through, margin and transfer costs can still apply. The NTF ETF program reimburses eligible commissions only after the stated holding condition.
Products and trading permissions
Stocks, ETFs, bonds and funds are broad strengths. Options, futures, margin, spot currencies, CFDs and complex products require permissions and may be restricted by entity, residence, experience or regulation. A brand-level available label is therefore not enough for an advanced product.
Crypto and CFD boundaries
IBKR advertises direct crypto through Paxos or Zero Hash at 0.12%–0.18% of trade value with a USD 1.75 minimum capped at 1% of trade value. Availability depends on residence and account type. These crypto holdings are not part of ordinary SIPC securities protection. CFDs are unavailable in the US securities scope and conditional for eligible non-US accounts.
Regulation and investor protection
Eligible Interactive Brokers LLC securities accounts have SIPC protection up to USD 500,000 including USD 250,000 for cash. IBKR also states excess SIPC coverage up to an additional USD 30 million per account including USD 900,000 cash subject to a USD 150 million aggregate. These figures do not apply automatically to another affiliate, futures positions or crypto.
Eligible Irish entity claims may fall under the Irish Investor Compensation Scheme subject to its rules. Eligible UK investment claims may fall under FSCS rules. Verify the current agreement and scheme eligibility rather than importing US limits.
Platforms and market data
Client Portal and mobile apps cover routine investing. Trader Workstation provides deeper order types, options tools and portfolio controls. Some live exchange data requires paid subscriptions; delayed or snapshot data must not be mistaken for a free real-time feed.
Transfers and account operations
Check funding currencies, withdrawal allowances, securities-transfer method, tax lots and statement exports before consolidating a portfolio. Fractional positions and product-specific holdings may not transfer in the same way as whole exchange-traded securities.
Risks and alternatives
- Entity and protection assumptions copied from the US page.
- Headline commission compared without market-data and third-party costs.
- Advanced permissions enabled without a risk plan.
- Crypto custody treated as SIPC-covered brokerage custody.
