Before opening an account: verify fees, tax treatment, product availability, regulation and investor protection for your country. Investing involves risk, and protections vary by legal entity.
Choose this broker if
  • The broker matches your country, account type, product needs and fee sensitivity.
  • You can verify regulation, investor protection and account terms for your legal entity.
  • The platform fits how you actually invest, not just the headline rating.
Consider alternatives if
  • You have not checked the local fee schedule, product type and investor-protection scheme.
  • You are choosing only by brand familiarity or a promotional offer.
  • The broker pushes products you do not understand, such as margin, options, CFDs or copy trading.

Robinhood at a glance

Short verdict: Robinhood is not one identical global broker. US clients can receive brokerage, options, futures and crypto through different group entities; the UK supports US stocks and approved options/futures but not ETFs; the EU offers derivative stock tokens, crypto and perpetual futures. Read the row for your country, entity and product.

Editorial verdict

Robinhood remains one of the simplest trading interfaces, and Legend adds a serious desktop workspace. The brand is useful for cost-conscious, disciplined users, but its simplicity can hide product risk and entity boundaries. A stock held through the US broker-dealer is not protected like crypto or a futures position.

The neutral rating stays 7.7/10. Low direct commissions and usability support the score; limited research depth, regional product limits, speculative-product risk and protection exclusions limit it.

Decision summary

  • Choose Robinhood if your local entity offers the product you need and you value a simple app, fractional investing or Legend.
  • Compare alternatives if you need broad global exchanges, mutual funds, stronger research or one consistent cross-border account.
  • Main rule: never carry a US brokerage claim into the UK or EU without an explicit official source.

Who Robinhood is best for

  • US investors buying stocks and ETFs with a simple workflow.
  • Approved US or UK users who understand options or futures risk.
  • Active users who want Robinhood Legend on desktop.
  • Eligible EU residents who understand that stock tokens and perpetual futures are derivatives, not ownership of shares or ETF units.

Country and entity matrix

The legal entity changes with product. US securities involve Robinhood Financial LLC and clearing/custody by Robinhood Securities, LLC; US futures involve Robinhood Derivatives, LLC; US crypto involves Robinhood Crypto, LLC. Robinhood U.K. Ltd serves the UK offer and introduces accounts under its disclosed structure. Robinhood Europe UAB, company code 306377915, provides EU stock-token, crypto and perpetual-futures products and is authorised by the Bank of Lithuania as a financial brokerage firm, crypto-asset service provider and payment institution.

Availability remains subject to residence, state or country, account approval and product eligibility. This profile does not promise service to residents of Russia.

United States brokerage and options

Eligible US users can trade listed stocks and ETFs, including fractional shares where supported. Options require approval and assigned permission levels. Stock and ETF options have USD 0 commission and no Robinhood per-contract fee, but regulatory, clearing and exchange fees can apply; index options use separate pricing.

Options can expire worthless, be assigned or create losses beyond the premium in multi-leg and short strategies. Approval is not a recommendation.

United States futures and crypto

Futures are offered through Robinhood Derivatives, LLC to approved accounts. They require margin and can lose more than the initial amount. Futures positions and cash held for futures are not SIPC protected.

Crypto is offered separately through Robinhood Crypto, LLC where available. Crypto is not a security position in the brokerage account and is not protected by SIPC or FDIC insurance. Spread, execution, custody, transfer and network costs can matter even when a commission headline is zero.

United Kingdom account and products

Robinhood U.K. Ltd is authorised by the FCA under firm reference 823590. The UK offer supports US exchange-listed stocks, ADRs and certain OTC securities. Official UK pages state that ETFs are not tradeable. Stock and index options and futures are supported subject to eligibility, appropriateness and account approval. Current pricing lists USD 0.50 per options contract and USD 0.75 per futures contract per side, with regulatory or exchange charges where applicable.

Check onboarding, permissions and current UK fee pages. Do not infer that an ETF visible in US materials or every US cash feature exists in the UK.

European Union stock tokens and crypto: perpetual futures

Robinhood Europe UAB's EU offer includes more than 2,000 Classic Stock Tokens, crypto and perpetual futures, subject to jurisdiction and eligibility. Classic Stock Tokens are derivative contracts that track reference shares or ETFs: the client does not own the underlying share or ETF unit and receives no voting or shareholder rights.

Stock Tokens start from EUR 1, are generally offered 24/5 and carry a disclosed 0.1% FX fee. Perpetual futures add leverage, funding and liquidation risk. These products are not covered by US SIPC, US FDIC or the UK FSCS.

Regulation by entity

Robinhood Financial LLC is a US broker-dealer (CRD 165998; SEC 8-69188). Robinhood Securities, LLC is a US broker-dealer/clearing entity (CRD 287900; SEC 8-69916). Robinhood Derivatives, LLC is a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant and NFA member (NFA 0424278). Robinhood Crypto, LLC is registered under NMLS 1702840. Robinhood U.K. Ltd is FCA-authorised under 823590. Robinhood Europe UAB, company 306377915, is authorised by the Bank of Lithuania as a financial brokerage firm, crypto-asset service provider and payment institution.

Investor protection and exclusions

Eligible securities and cash held for US brokerage customers receive SIPC protection up to USD 500,000, including USD 250,000 for cash, if a member fails and customer property is missing. Robinhood also discloses excess coverage with aggregate and per-customer limits. These schemes do not cover market losses.

Crypto and futures are excluded. Fully paid securities lending can change protection for loaned shares. UK users should verify whether their eligible securities are custodied in the US structure and must not assume general FSCS protection. EU stock/ETF tokens, crypto and perpetual futures have no SIPC/FDIC/FSCS protection.

Fees and commissions

US electronically traded listed stocks and ETFs carry USD 0 Robinhood commission; pass-through fees can apply. US stock/ETF options carry no Robinhood contract fee, while index options, futures, margin, Gold, transfers and third-party charges have separate pricing. UK ETFs are unavailable; approved UK options and futures use the prices described above. EU Classic Stock Tokens carry a 0.1% FX fee, while crypto and perpetual-futures spread, execution, funding and other costs depend on their terms.

“Commission-free” is not “cost-free”. Compare total cost for the exact region, entity and product.

Robinhood Legend and mobile apps

Robinhood supports web, iOS and Android. Robinhood Legend is the verified desktop trading platform for eligible brokerage users and offers multi-chart layouts and active-trading tools. Its existence corrects the stale desktop=false flat claim, but it does not make Legend available to every EU token, crypto or perpetual-futures customer or every feature in every region.

Cash and margin: account requirements

There is no universal minimum for a standard self-directed brokerage account, but margin, Gold, options, futures, deposits and individual instruments have their own requirements. Account approval and product permission are separate decisions.

Red flags to check

  • A US claim is shown as if it applies to the UK or EU.
  • Crypto or futures are described as SIPC-protected.
  • Options or futures appear before permission and risk checks.
  • Commission-free copy hides spread, FX, margin, transfer or pass-through fees.
  • A product page for one region is treated as universal availability.
