Short answer: there is no universal replacement for Interactive Brokers. Start with the legal entity that can accept your residence, then identify the exact IBKR feature you want to replace. A simpler recurring-investment app, a European stock-and-ETF account, a premium multi-asset platform, a US securities app and a CFD account are different products. Compare ownership, markets, currencies, orders, total cost, transfers, records and protection before moving assets.
Start with the entity product and workflow you need
Interactive Brokers operates through several affiliates. Market access, products, permissions, pricing and investor-protection arrangements depend on the affiliate, residence, account and client classification. The global brand is not one identical account.
Use the Interactive Brokers review to identify the current account, then compare only services that can legally offer the required product. A Russian-language page explains the same checks; it does not establish availability to residents of Russia or any other country.
Define the reason for leaving Interactive Brokers
| Reason | Feature to verify | False shortcut to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring ETF investing | Eligible ETFs, fractions, schedule, funding, FX and execution time | Assuming an automated plan is advice or guarantees execution |
| Simpler order workflow | Supported order types, price control, market hours and statements | Equating fewer controls with lower investment risk |
| European shares and ETFs | Entity, exchange, PRIIPs document access, currency and transfer route | Assuming every European resident receives the same products |
| Premium multi-asset platform | Stocks, ETFs, bonds, options, futures, FX, APIs and local tariff | Comparing a “from” commission without custody or FX |
| US app-led securities account | US eligibility, securities entity, products, reports and SIPC scope | Treating a US-only service as a global replacement |
Confirm country eligibility and the legal entity
Check the contracting company in the application and client agreement. Confirm it on the regulator or broker legal page and record the country list, account type, regulator, custody arrangement and compensation scheme. Availability can change before the marketing page changes.
Robinhood's current US onboarding page requires a qualifying US status, residential address and Social Security number. Webull Financial LLC's SIPC statement concerns its US securities account and excludes futures accounts. These are not general statements about every affiliate carrying the same brand.
Confirm that the alternative offers the same product
A cash share or ETF, fractional beneficial interest, CFD, copy transaction, option and futures contract are not interchangeable. Check the order ticket and agreement rather than the search symbol.
- Trading 212: its Invest product supports whole and fractional securities where eligible; Pies execute in regular market hours and non-base-currency orders can trigger FX.
- XTB: separate real stocks and ETFs from stock/ETF CFDs. Its fractional product is described as a fiduciary right linked to a whole share held by XTB.
- DEGIRO: offers whole-share investing and states that it does not offer fractional shares.
- eToro: its risk disclosure states that leveraged, short and some copy transactions are CFDs, while some unleveraged BUY stock or ETF transactions can be underlying assets.
- Plus500: the reviewed stock-CFD service provides price exposure without ownership of the underlying share. Do not use it as a direct replacement for a cash securities portfolio.

Alternative examples checked 15 July 2026
| Candidate and scope | Workflow it may cover | Material limitation | Official evidence to recheck |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trading 212, eligible Invest accounts | Fractions, Pies and recurring purchases | Entity, product, FX, execution and transfer rules vary; fractions cannot transfer | Pies, fractions, protection and transfer help |
| XTB, real stocks/ETFs and Investment Plans where offered | ETF allocation plans and fractional rights | Do not mix OMI securities with CFDs; fees and protection follow entity | Investment Plan, fractional-right and protection pages |
| DEGIRO, current UK-facing share/ETF service | Whole European shares and ETFs | No fractions; derivatives access is legacy-profile specific; no UK FSCS | Product, fraction, fee, transfer and protection pages |
| Saxo, local multi-asset entity | Broad stocks, ETFs, bonds and advanced products | Product range, FX, custody and protection differ by entity and residence | Local product, pricing and protection pages |
| Robinhood or Webull, US securities entities | US app-led stock, ETF and options workflows for eligible clients | Not global IBKR substitutes; other product accounts have different protection | US eligibility, product and SIPC pages |
| eToro or Plus500, exact transaction/service only | Social features or leveraged derivative exposure where permitted | CFD exposure is not ownership of the underlying security | Current product ticket, risk disclosure and entity agreement |
The table is a due-diligence map, not a ranking. It does not promise account acceptance, product access, execution quality or profit.
Compare whole shares fractions and recurring execution
Fractional products differ in legal form, order handling, voting, dividends, corporate actions, lending and transferability. A recurring plan adds scheduling, funding and market-hours rules. Confirm whether failed deposits are skipped, whether orders are aggregated and what happens when an instrument becomes ineligible.
If recurring and fractional investing is the main reason to leave, compare brokers' fractional-share eligibility, recurring-order support and ETF pricing before moving.
Calculate trading FX holding and margin costs
| Layer | What to record | Why the headline can mislead |
|---|---|---|
| Trading | Commission, minimum, handling, exchange and regulatory charges | A zero or low headline can exclude third-party costs and minimums |
| Currency | Manual/automatic FX, spread or markup, minimum and dividend conversion | One broker labels an all-in adjustment differently from another |
| Holding | Custody, connectivity, data, platform and inactivity charges | Recurring fees matter without a trade |
| Margin | Reference rate, spread, currency, balance tier and house requirements | “Low margin” is meaningless without tier and date |
| Leaving | Transfer, closure, withdrawal, liquidation and FX | Exit friction can outweigh an entry promotion |
Do not publish a timeless claim that IBKR or an alternative has the lowest margin or FX cost. Use the current entity schedule and the expected order, currency, balance and holding period. Continue with Broker Fees Explained.
Check transfers reports APIs and support
Before moving, verify in-kind transfer support, transfer rail, eligible markets, fractions, options, tax lots, residual cash, fee and estimated freeze. Export statements, trade confirmations, tax records and corporate-action history first.
IBKR APIs, advanced order tools and multi-currency reporting may have no like-for-like substitute in an app-led account. Conversely, an investor who never uses those features may prefer a narrower workflow. Compare capability actually used, not feature count.
Separate custody protection and market risk
Custody/segregation describes how client property is held. Investor compensation can cover only eligible claims under the rules and limit of the scheme attached to the legal entity. Neither reimburses normal market loss, CFD loss, margin interest or a failed strategy.
Interactive Brokers LLC publishes SIPC and excess-policy information for its US securities business. Interactive Brokers Ireland describes the Irish Investor Compensation Scheme and notes that some assets held with IBLLC can have different coverage. Treat each statement as entity and asset specific. Read Investor Protection Explained.
Know when there is no direct equivalent
A single alternative may not replace IBKR's combination of markets, currencies, order types, options, bonds, futures, margin, reporting and APIs. Splitting assets across brokers can add duplicated records, cash and FX friction, transfer complexity and separate failure/security processes. “No equivalent” is a valid conclusion.
Do not replace a transferable security with a CFD merely to obtain a simpler app, and do not choose a US-only account that cannot accept the residence.
Know when Interactive Brokers remains the fit
IBKR can remain suitable when the investor uses several markets and currencies, advanced orders, listed derivatives, bonds, margin methodology, reporting or APIs and has verified the applicable entity and tariff. Complexity alone is not a reason to migrate if the required workflow is controlled and documented.
Compare Interactive Brokers vs DEGIRO, Interactive Brokers vs Trading 212 and Saxo vs Interactive Brokers only after the entity/product filter.
Use a migration workflow and stop at red flags
- List the positions, currencies, permissions, reports and tools currently used.
- Confirm the receiving entity, residence eligibility and exact product form.
- Model trading, FX, holding, margin and exit costs for one year.
- Verify in-kind transfer support, unsupported assets, fractions and tax-lot handling.
- Open and test the receiving account with a small amount before requesting a transfer.
- Save statements and keep enough liquidity for settlement, fees and rejected assets.
- The comparison names a brand but not the contracting entity.
- A real stock, fractional interest and CFD are shown in one row without product labels.
- A US or UK protection statement is applied globally.
- “Zero commission,” “low margin” or “free FX” has no dated full schedule.
- The receiving broker cannot explain transferability or tax records.
- The migration requires selling assets without modelling tax, FX and market exposure.
FAQ
What is the simplest alternative to Interactive Brokers?
There is no universal answer. Trading 212 or XTB may provide narrower recurring-investment workflows where eligible, while DEGIRO can cover whole European shares and ETFs and Saxo can cover a broader multi-asset workflow. Confirm entity, product, fees and transfer rules.
Can Robinhood or Webull replace Interactive Brokers?
Only for an eligible user and defined US workflow. Their US securities accounts are not global substitutes for IBKR's international market, currency and entity coverage, and futures or crypto products can use different entities and protections.
Is Plus500 an alternative for a long-term stock portfolio?
The reviewed Plus500 stock-CFD service does not provide ownership of the underlying share. It is not a direct substitute for a cash stock or ETF portfolio. Confirm any separate share-dealing service independently for the residence and entity.
Does investor protection make one broker safer from market loss?
No. Compensation schemes address specified failures or shortfalls under their rules. They do not insure market value, leverage, margin, CFD or investment-decision losses.
